Preparing records

Preparing records for your accountant

A practical starting point for organising information before accounting work begins.

Start with the agreed checklist

Ask which records are needed for your business and the period involved. A checklist should reflect the work agreed, rather than every document you hold.

Keep supporting records together

Organise bank information, invoices, receipts and relevant payroll records. Keep original records and identify anything missing or unclear.

Explain unusual transactions

Note loans, asset purchases, transfers and other items that may need explanation. Tell your accountant about changes to the business.

Share information through the agreed route

Use the method agreed with your accountant. Do not put passwords, tax references or confidential documents into an initial public enquiry.
